Do Trump’s statements push mediators’ efforts toward a truce in Gaza?
U.S. President Donald Trump returned to speak about the situation in Gaza with warnings about the loss of two hostages and a call for the release of the remaining ones, without explicitly rejecting the complete occupation of the Gaza Strip. Meanwhile, the new proposal put forward in mediators’ contacts is still awaiting a response or Israel’s participation in the talks.
Experts believe that this American rhetoric, which has not explicitly supported the new proposal for a 60-day truce since it was introduced a week ago, will not be a helpful factor in strengthening mediators’ continuous efforts. They predict that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s team will likely join the negotiations soon, in parallel with the pressure of the military operation that is also set to begin making the path to an agreement dependent on Hamas offering concessions, or another collapse occurring.
The Israeli newspaper Maariv reported on Saturday that Trump’s remarks about the potential number of living hostages “shook their families” and may push Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to return to the option of negotiations.
Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump credited himself with the release of hostages during the last ceasefire agreement between January and March, and spoke of the ongoing efforts to free the remaining group, saying:
“If they now have 20, but that number might not really be 20 because two of them are no longer therewe are doing our utmost to secure the hostages’ release, it is not easy.”
He added: “This situation (Hamas holding hostages) must end; it is blackmail and it must end,” pointing out that not all families of the hostages are opposed to Israel’s full occupation of Gaza City in reference to the Israeli decision to completely occupy the Strip.

Palestinian Presidency warns of Israel’s aim in not halting Gaza assault
Palestinian Presidency spokesperson Nabil Abu Rudeineh warned against Israel’s policy of refusing to end its assault before imposing arrangements that would allow it to continue its war of genocide and starvation, aimed at forcibly displacing the Palestinian people, while also advancing settlement expansion and settler terrorism in the West Bank.
He added that the occupying state is defying all international calls to stop the war and to end practices that violate international law and UN resolutions, through its insistence on continuing its all-out aggression against the Palestinian people. The latest example, he noted, was the destruction and devastation in the village of al-Mughayir, along with the unchecked violence of settlers, as is also happening in Jenin, Tulkarm, their refugee camps, and other Palestinian cities.
Hamas: We agreed to a partial deal and showed readiness for a comprehensive one, but.
Hamas said on Sunday, August 24, 2025, that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s approval of a plan to occupy Gaza after the movement accepted the mediators’ proposal proves his determination to obstruc the agreement.
In a press statement, Hamas confirmed that it had agreed to a partial deal and also expressed readiness for a comprehensive one, but Netanyahu continues to reject all solutions.
The movement pointed out that both Israeli and American acknowledgments confirm that Netanyahu is the real obstacle to prisoner-exchange deals and to a ceasefire.

The Cabinet also considered Israel’s admission of the crime of targeting journalists, civil defense teams, and patients at Nasser Hospital yesterday as coming only after it was documented live by cameras, calling for this crime and others to be a motive for more effective international pressure to stop the genocide against our people in the Gaza Strip, and in the West Bank, which is experiencing an unprecedented colonial assault and a wave of escalating attacks, the latest of which was the targeting of the villages of Al-Mughayyir and Sinjil, as well as the ongoing raids on various cities, towns, and camps in the West Bank.
